On Sunday 4 June, we will celebrate Mother's Day in France. Many young mothers will receive handmade noodle necklaces, a bouquet of flowers from the local craftsman and/or hear a lovely poem read by their little blonde head.
Others will share a family meal or enjoy a favourite dessert made by their offspring. Mother's Day is an important day in the whole country, but not only. We explain its origin and give you some gift ideas that are sure to please 😉
A BIT OF HISTORY...
Some might think that Mother's Day is a day dreamed up by marketing managers for florists, others associate it with Marshal Pétain, but neither of these suggestions is true. The tradition goes back to the time of ancient Greece. Every spring the Greeks worshipped Amalthea, the mother of Zeus. In pagan rites, fertility was celebrated at this time of year. Then on the 4th Sunday of Lent, Christians celebrated fertility. At the same time, whole families of believers used this Sunday to go to the "mother church", the most important place of worship in the region. This is how Mothering Sunday came about.
IN THE USA
In 1907, Anna Jarvis, a young activist, launched a campaign dedicated to mothers as a tribute to her deceased mother, a schoolteacher. It was not until 1914 that the law was approved by the American government, making the holiday official. Since then, Americans have celebrated Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May.
IN FRANCE
In 1918, American soldiers imported Mother's Day to France. It was made official under the Vichy regime by Marshal Pétain. It was in 1950 that General De Gaulle democratised Mother's Day with the law of 24 May 1950.
Today, 71% of the world celebrates Mother's Day in May. In France, its date varies according to Pentecost: we wish a happy Mother's Day on the last Sunday of May or the first of June.
